Learning Self Love & Building Self Esteem
Self love, a healthy, balanced regard for one’s own well-being and happiness, is often a foreign concept in today’s society. Some people have been raised to always put others first, and never taught that their own needs too are just as important. Some people were never shown love or appreciation, therefore they sadly have no idea how to expect it or feel it. They feel unworthy, unimportant, with a low self-value.
Still others were actively neglected or abused (which would include being spoiled), so their concept of themselves has been skewed and disfigured out of a healthy shape. This can lead to being a people-pleaser with low boundaries. Or perhaps it can lead to someone developing a narcissistic nature/ selfish tendencies due to overcompensation from feeling unimportant and unappreciated. It can also lead to some very unhealthy practices, seeking out the care and love one deeply needs. When all the time, it is inside of us.
The idea that “you can’t pour from an empty cup” if the basis for self-love and self value. You cannot give to others, or be the best parent/ partner/ businessperson/ citizen/ human you can be, unless your own ‘cup’ is full. We all need to know how to refill our own cup, as very often others are busy with their own concerns. We can’t rely on others to always provide everything we need. It is healthy to be able to provide for yourself. If we all mastered self-love and self-appreciation, and were all ‘full’ to give freely, we would all receive appreciation by default. What a wonderful world that would be.
In the meantime, it’s essential to learn to truly appreciate yourself and refill your own cup anytime you need. You’ll develop a new confidence, and experience a new peace of mind, an enhanced capacity to handle stress and difficulties. You’ll learn how to rise above negativity, how to deal with conflict, and how to respond maturely in difficult situations with others. You’ll also realize that you no longer need attention, approval and validation from others. It’s a level of freedom and contentment you may never have experienced before.
Learning self-love, self-value and self-care is often the catalyst for people to make dramatic changes in their lives, leading to great health and success. This can also be the first step on a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment. And we’re always a work in progress. There’s nothing to lose.
